What is private health insurance?

Private health insurance provides access to private medical services, specialists, and hospitals. In comparison with the public health system it offers faster appointments and direct access to specialists.

Who can apply for private health insurance?

Anyone can apply, including Spanish residents, expatriates, and non-residents as long as you have a Spanish address. Some policies have age restrictions.

What does a private full cover health insurance cover?

Coverage varies depending on the type of policy, but they generally include:

  • General medicine and specialist consultations
  • Diagnostic tests (X-rays, MRIs, blood tests, etc.)
  • Hospitalization and surgeries
  • Emergency medical assistance
  • Maternity and pediatric care
  • Basic dental care (check up, extractions, cleaning)

Does private health insurance cover pre-existing conditions?

At Sanitas Estepona, we act solely as administrative agents. The evaluation of pre-existing conditions is handled by the medical department at our head office in Madrid. This means we must first complete the full application process before they can determine how any pre-existing conditions will be treated under your policy.

Depending on your age, there are also basic policies available that do not require disclosure of medical history.

How much does private health insurance cost in Spain?

Premiums vary based on age, number of insured people, coverage level, and area of residency in Spain. We will guide you and create a personalized quote for your needs.

Can I get discounts?

All prices and any discounts are set by the Head Office. Some insurance types offer a 5% discount for families (at least 4 persons). Sanitas Más Salud Familia is a specially well priced policy for families from 3 people onwards. Annual payment gives a 4% discount.

At and until what age I can apply for private health insurance?

The maximum age to contract a full cover health insurance is 75 years. Newborns and kids up until 3 years of age need to be insured with an adult. From 3 years onwards, a child doesn’t need to be insured with another person.

What are co-payments?

Some plans include co-payments for each service, while others offer full coverage without additional fees. Higher coverage plans usually have no co-payments.

Can I cancel my policy at any time?

Sanitas health insurance policies have a duration of 12 months and renew automatically. We will guide you in this process if needed as well.

Can foreign citizens take out private health insurance?

Yes, any nationality or citizenship are eligible for private health insurance. Once you have obtained your NIE or TIE, please upload the documents via the app.

Does private health insurance cover me outside of Spain?

All new Sanitas health insurance plans include international emergency coverage of up to €12,000 per insured person per year. For broader global coverage, the Sanitas International Residents and Premium 500,000 plans offer full medical care worldwide via reimbursement. Please refer to the specific policy conditions for further details.

Is private health insurance required for residency in Spain?

Yes, private health insurance is a legal requirement for residency in Spain if you intend to stay for more than three consecutive months. Authorities require a certificate demonstrating full medical coverage without co-payments, and in some cases, proof of annual prepayment.

What are the waiting periods?

A waiting period is the time that must pass from the time you start your insurance until you can use the advanced services (advanced tests such as colonoscopy, operations, advanced treatments such as radiation, chemotherapy, etc.). After that time has passed, you are free to use them.

From day 1, all "usual" visits and treatments are covered, such as the doctor's visits, x-rays, blood tests, ultrasound, mammography, among others.
